WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 28, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Today, U.S. Congressman Steve Pearce introduced reauthorization of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA).
“Today, I introduced a NAHASDA reauthorization, which provides much-needed support to our Native American communities,” said Pearce. “In addition to reauthorizing critical components of the current law, my bill makes pragmatic updates that will provide tribes nationwide with greater flexibility and simplification when working to meet their housing needs.
“What separates my legislation from previous reauthorizations, and the original law, is the inclusion of a demonstration project, which will allow Native American communities to access and partner with private industry more fluidly than ever before. This was inspired by the successes of similar programs within the Department of Defense, and I am hopeful that this program will help lead to greater homeownership and economic opportunity for Native Americans.”

The Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act was first signed into law in 1996. Since 1996, the act has been reauthorized and amended a number of times. Congressman Pearce’s bill would reauthorize NAHASDA for five years, and text of the bill can be read here.
