HUD CHARGES NEW MEXICO LANDLORD WITH DISCRIMINATION FOR DENYING DISABLED TENANT’S REQUEST TO MAKE...

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced today that it is charging an Albuquerque, NM, landlord with violating the Fair Housing Act by refusing to allow a tenant with disabilities to modify his rental home to enable the tenant touse a wheelchair, even though the tenant agreed to pay all costs associated with making the modifications. In requesting the modifications, the tenant informed the landlord that all of the work would be performed by licensed contractors and that if the landlord wished, he would pay to return the unit to its original condition.

Heinrich Bill to Boost Tribal Homeownership Becomes Law

Legislation sponsored by U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) to remove barriers between Native American families and homeownership was signed into law today by President Obama during an Oval Office ceremony at the White House. The Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Homeownership (HEARTH) Act, allows tribes to exercise greater control over their lands and eliminate bureaucratic delays that stand in the way of homeownership and economic development in tribal communities.

Former President of Keyworth Mortgage Funding Group Receives 13-Month Prison Sentence for Bank Fraud...

Yesterday, a federal judge in Santa Fe, New Mexico sentenced Manuel Garcia, 70, currently residing in Los Angeles, California, to a 13-month prison sentence, to be followed five years of supervised release, for his bank fraud conviction. Garcia also was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $585,243.59 to U.S. Bank of Albuquerque, which was formerly known as First Community Bank (FCB). Garcia was ordered to surrender to a federal correctional institution to be designated by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to serve his prison sentence.
